Saturday was pretty interesting...
I knew it was going to be a long day and it was...but not tiring...
School was good. Made it in by 8.30 and had five classes on the trot till 11.30
Explained bar graphs to 6th A (there's a post I've been meaning to write about the Trials and Tribulations of 6th A for a while now but the moment has sorta passed. Maybe if I channel a kindred spirit again...
Or perhaps I will write it during my reflection on the entire experience...)
Revised geography with 5th B and then two classes of Personality Development with 9th A. Discussions on terrorism and sharing some personal experiences with the class (regarding airport incidents and security) seemed to go down well...
As I was leaving to go home, a couple of the kids came and told me that they'd enjoyed that day's class. That's quite gratifying. Something similar even happened last week when a Fifth Year told me VERY enthusiastically that he'd enjoyed the last lesson I'd taught. It was a lesson on Occupations and Industries and not really very interesting stuff and I asked him what was good about it. He responded by saying that I teach well. Need to keep my feet on the ground here but it is a VERY good feeling... *grin*
Came home after school, ate, changed into uniform and went to college. There was a point to prove...
With my teaching assignments, I have not been going to the so called CDPs (Career Development Programs aka snooze fests) organised by college. However, some people think I do it because I want to (skiving those programs) but I needed to prove that I don't skive because I can...but I do it out of other commitments.
So I ended up at college at 1.15 for something that did not start till 2.20 and I was quite pissy as a result.
Something a teacher of mine remarked on. She said that she'd never seen me upset or angry. She's been teaching me for all four sems...so that's saying something. People don't really seem to believe that I have grown more patient. Perhaps this is something that proves it. Or perhaps it's just all part of the mask and show...as some others believe. Meh...I'm in a happy place. Funnily enough, as I was bitching about the lateness of the speaker, one of my classmates told me to live in the present and be happy. I had to correct him. I was definitely living in the present, cursing the speaker's lateness and was very happy being bitchy! *grin*
When the speaker did turn up, a couple of the girls were like..."ooh cute!"...unfortunately, that only reflected on the fair skinned fascination of Indians. He was not ugly...but neither was he handsome or even cute. Just...fair. Go figure...
His style was engaging enough, talking in some ways that I do. However, I don't pepper my chats with epithets like "darling" and "sweetheart" unless I'm being sarcastic...that strikes me as being too coy and that's what he was...
Having come to speak on marketing mix, he avoided almost all mention of it (a common salient point of CDP figures - talking on things besides the point) but overall...with a shortish lecture, he managed to be slightly interesting...
One of the reasons I was pissy about the delay was that the later he came, the later we'd wind up and I was scheduled to go to my friend's Arangetram at 5.30 and I nearly didn't end up there on time.
However, all the planets and stars aligned and I got in just as my friend was being announced. The Arangetram is the graduation show, the debut of danseuses who study Bharata Natyam, a south Indian dance form. Having taken the permission of their guru (teacher), the dancers are supposed to give a free show as their debut and are allowed to charge for subsequent performances.
I'd been to a couple of these previously and never really understood much but time had done its thing and it was a pretty good experience...though I did not understand the words of the music, the compere did a good job of explaining the situations and the girls (three of them, including my friend) did a brilliant job of translating that into rhythm and grace. There are two versions of the origins of the name of the dance form...one is that it comes from a work called the Natyashastra by the Sanskrit author Bharata. Another states that while Natyam is dance, Bharata is made up of Bhava or expression, Raaga or melody and Tala for rhythm. The expressions of the girls in depicting various mythological characters in different dance pieces were exquisite and drew pathos and applause from the crowds, especially when certain crucial aspects of the scenes were being performed. I was not really sure what to expect but thought that boredom might be one of the things but I did not get bored at all, even for a moment. Combine that with the fact that they managed to wrap up the show in 2.5 hours as scheduled, including the speeches and felicitation...it was a fantastic show!
Later on, a bunch of school chums went out for a bite to eat...had a good time and then came home to tiredness...a reason due to which this post comes today...
Today was fine. Ultimate time as usual...was fun. I lost my first game though and that was not cool. However, I suspect that it's because my team was getting tired. Blazing sunshine at the park today. We need to figure out another time and venue for the action from next week...However, with another couple of people introduced to the game and (apparently) having enjoyed themselves, it's a step ahead...
Invites have been sent (I believe) to three schools to come learn the sport and watch a match on saturday and I hope it works out well...We sent out an invite letter, a copy of the article which figured in the paper and the Ten Simple Rules of Ultimate document...
Combine all of this with being accepted into two out of three places I've applied to...(still waiting on the third)...2008 has been a pretty good year until now and hope it continues its purple patch for a while to come as yet...
